Sarasota Landfill Scalehouse

New Scale Installations and Foundations in Sarasota

This project involved the replacement of three truck scales, along with associated underground utilities, asphalt paving, and electrical upgrades at the Sarasota County Landfill, the busiest landfill in the county. The location presented unique challenges, as the worksite was situated directly at the facility entrance, requiring zero disruption to daily operations.

To achieve this, the project was carefully phased and much of the work was performed at night. Each scale replacement required seamless coordination so that as one scale was taken offline, the new scale was brought online immediately. This effort demanded close collaboration among DEC Contracting, the Sarasota County IT Department, the scale vendor, the electrical contractor, and landfill operations staff.

The work was subject to strict roadway and underground utility specifications aligned with FDOT standards. To maintain traffic flow, DEC installed a temporary scale and constructed a temporary bypass lane, ensuring at least three operational scales were available throughout construction. The electrical scope included relocation of fiber, installation of conduits for future gate systems, and all underground electrical work for the new scales. In addition, DEC installed posts to support a planned canopy that will span the two existing scale houses.

The project was successfully completed on time and under budget, with no contractor-initiated change orders, demonstrating DEC Contracting’s commitment to efficiency, safety, and operational continuity.
